I will help you develop a yoga self-practice safely, effectively and with complete confidence even as a beginner - one that you can integrate into your life and practice anywhere at anytime.

I will teach you the basics of Ashtanga Yoga - one of the most respected yoga styles in the world. 

This course is even suitable for those new to yoga because it offers an approach for which you don't need any prior experience. Classes are in English.

  • You'll develop a personal relationship to your practice that will give you confidence and understanding as you progress on your yoga journey.

Karen Kurzmeyer - My Story

As a driven and over-worked business owner, I tried yoga to help relieve stress and regain strength and flexibility by joining a weekly Hatha yoga class. 

I certainly felt good after class and practised on and off for a few years. However, it was negotiable, meaning if I was too busy or too tired I didn’t make it to the studio (which was quite often). I decided I wanted to be able to practice yoga on my own without always needing to attend a class. I booked a one-week yoga workshop in Thailand - my first workshop ever! - and went to this workshop with that single goal in mind.

This retreat was also my birthday present. I’d just turned 50 and hadn’t had a business free holiday in 12 years. I was struggling with what I should be celebrating, I was grateful for so many things but deep down felt out of balance.

It was during this workshop that I was introduced to Ashtanga Mysore and began a daily practice of my own.  

That one week profoundly changed everything - on a physical, mental and emotional level. I felt deeply in tune with my body, a feeling I hadn’t experienced so consciously since my ballet career days 20 years earlier. 

I not only came back with a daily practice but a strong desire to share that same experience with others. I was certain that there were many people like me who on the outside were very skilfull in juggling their family/career/life commitments but were struggling to find a healthy balance. 

It was a now or never decision - so I returned to Thailand, completed my yoga teacher training, sold my company and became a professional yoga teacher.  

I'm fascinated by the nuances in the body and how it's able to move (or not) based on what's going on in the mind and love seeing the external and internal transformation my clients experience over time. It’s subtle at first but the shifts have been significant and huge. 

Teaching Background

I completed my yoga teacher training in Ashtanga Vinyasa 200 RYT and 500 RYT at Centered Yoga in Thailand, am certified by Yoga Alliance, and regularly attend continued professional development in philosophy, anatomy, pranayama (breathing) and meditation. 

My teacher is Paul Dallaghan, certified by K. Pattabhi Jois (founder of Ashtanga) and a senior student of Sri O.P. Tiwari, one of the last remaining classical yogis teaching traditional and classical pranayama (yogic breathing).  

My varied background as a professional ballet dancer, teacher and business owner contribute to my yoga teaching, allowing me to help students that, like me, are looking for a way to integrate yoga into their busy lives for the greatest benefit.

What Will I Learn?

This Beginners Yoga Course: has been created for people who are tired of feeling stiff and sluggish and are interested in learning to move their body safely and effectively. 

What will be covered during the sessions? 

  • The philosophy behind the practice: why we do it and what the benefits are 
  • The importance of breath and explanation of the specific breathing technique 
  • The importance and explanation of where to focus the eyes 
  • The explanation of the internal locks ~ how and why we apply these
  • The explanation of the terms Ashtanga & Vinyasa
  • Detailed instruction of key poses and various standing positions - how to adapt them to your personal needs to progress in the yoga in a safe, intelligent manner.

What Do I Need to Wear?

Comfortable clothing that allows your body freedom to move and breathe. We practice in bare feet.

Do I Need to Bring a Yoga Mat?

Studio yoga mats will be available to use during the course FREE OF CHARGE. However, we recommend purchasing your own yoga mat. This will help you stay accountable, build your confidence and make progress so that you can practise in between classes and after the course has finished. Any other yoga props required during class (e.g. straps, blocks, cushions and blankets) will be provided by the studio.  

Should I Eat or Drink Before Class?

Try not to eat for 2-3 hours before you practice. Try to avoid drinking during practice.

Is This Only For Women?

No, absolutely not! This style of yoga is particularly popular with men. It's structured, athletic and strength-building.  

I’m Not Flexible Can I Still Practice Yoga? 

Definitely! Yoga is for everyone, and one of the many benefits of a yoga practice is increased strength and flexibility which can lead to less pain and improved health throughout the body.

I Have Pre-Existing Pain and/or Injuries, Can I Still Practise Yoga?

Yes. Yoga is often advised to those dealing with pain or healing from injuries. However, please be sure to receive your doctor’s permission to begin any new physical activity. Tell your yoga teacher if you're experiencing pain or recovering from any injuries, so they can help guide you through a safe yoga practice.

What Are The Course Dates? 

Every Saturday for 6 weeks (no class on 15 April): 11/18/25 March, 1, 8, 22 April 2017 from 11.00am -12.30pm.

What Happens After Six Weeks?

By the end of Beginners Yoga Course: An Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga, you'll have the tools and ability to continue on your yoga journey and step into an Ashtanga Mysore class with confidence and awareness. 

You can choose to practise on your own and join an Ashtanga Mysore class at a local studio. Ashtanga Yoga Luzern run by Martyna Syguda is currently the only place in central Switzerland where you can practice this method in its traditional form.

What is Mysore-style Ashtanga?

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is one of the most traditional and respected styles of yoga in the world. Ashtanga can be practised in guided classes where an instructor leads students through the set sequence of postures and focused breathing techniques. 

However, often considered the most beneficial option is a Mysore-style class, a group class that allows each student to practice independently, at their own pace, while still benefiting from the guidance and support of an instructor.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is ideal for complete beginners, those who haven't practised in a while, professionals who travel a lot.

Plus those who of you who used to be fit but then family/work/life commitments took priority and you long to get back into a routine and improve your health, fitness, well-being and stress-management.

It's also suitable if you tried yoga in the past but gave up as you didn’t get it, couldn’t follow along or felt self-conscious.

Who Is This Course Not For?

Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, founder of the Ashtanga Research Institute in Mysore, India explained: Anyone can practice. Young man can practice. Old man can practice. Very old man can practice. Man who is sick, he can practice. Man who doesn't have strength can practice. Except lazy people; lazy people can't practice ashtanga yoga.”

When taught with care and understanding, all students, regardless of limitations, can benefit from this practice. 

Ashtanga Yoga is essentially a breathing practice so if you can breathe you can practice!
